CJP Protest: Delhi Police Tells SC How Facial Recognition Was Used to Identify Criminals| Capital TV

1 min read

The Delhi Police has informed the Supreme Court through an affidavit that facial recognition technology was exclusively deployed to identify known criminals and history-sheeters during student protests held last month at Jantar Mantar in the national capital. Rejecting serious allegations of mass surveillance made by petitioners, the police maintained that the technology did not infringe upon the fundamental rights to privacy of peaceful demonstrators. According to the affidavit filed on Monday, the system functioned strictly as a preventive security measure to maintain law and order and curb potential unlawful disruptions. The apex court is currently reviewing the legality and procedural safeguards surrounding the use of automated facial recognition tools by law enforcement agencies during public demonstrations.

In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court late Monday, Delhi Police rejected allegations of mass surveillance using facial recognition technology during last month’s student protests at Jantar Mantar and stated that the system does not profile every individual and only captures those with prior criminal records.
